Making Coke bottles from sugar cane

Coke has developed technology to produce fully recyclable plastic bottles that are 30% composed of plastic made from sugar cane. This reduces the amount of petroleum byproducts used to make the plastic.

India, Germany may cooperate in biotech and renewable energy

India and Germany may cooperate in developing cutting-edge technology in areas such as renewable energy and biotech, besides enhancing the

ongoing collaboration in infrastructure, manufacturing and engineering.

Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, who is on a three-day visit to Düsseldorf and Berlin, discussed the possibility of strategic partnership in these sectors with German Minister of Economics and Technologies Rainer Brüderle.

“Discussions focused on taking Indo-German collaboration forward in key areas such as knowledge sectors like ICT, energy, including renewable energy, cutting edge technology including environmental and green technology, life sciences and biotechnology, nano-technologies, small city and integrated townships, besides further enhancement of ongoing cooperation in infrastructure, manufacturing and engineering,” according to a statement released here Friday.

India and Germany have agreed on cooperating in multilateral fora on combating protectionist tendencies that have emerged in some developed countries, especially in the United States.

US energy firm to invest $2.4 bn for solar power plants

US-based energy firm Bergamo Acquisition Corp Friday said it has entered into a joint venture with an Indian company to construct six solar thermal power plants of 100 MW capacity each with an investment of $400 million for every plant.

Bergamo will have 60 percent equity in the joint venture, while its local partner, the promoters of Esoft Informatics Private Ltd., an Indian software company, will hold the remaining stake.

Priyanka Chopra – India’s green ambassador

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has agreed to be the national green ambassador to initiate eco-friendly campaigns in India, Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh announced Monday.

“I have been talking to Priyanka about how she can be a part of environment friendly campaigns nationally and be involved with projects such as tiger conservation and river cleaning, especially the Ganga river. I have said that this would be like her public service,” Ramesh said at a press conference here.

“She (Priyanka) has been very kind and has given her consent for it,” he added.

The 28-year-old actress is currently the green ambassador for NDTV-Toyota’s environment campaign Greenathon. She was also present at the event, which was organised to announce Green Awards which are aimed at encouraging and acknowledging people who contribute towards environment conservation.
